Team Nigeria’s women wrestlers delivered a commanding performance, winning eight gold medals and two silver medals to secure a record-extending 15th African women’s wrestling title at the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
Nigeria once again underlined its dominance on the continent, finishing top of the standings in the women’s category with a near-perfect medal sweep across the 10 events.
Nigeria’s Golden Charge
Commonwealth champion Mercy Genesis set the tone early, securing a comfortable 6–0 victory over Tunisia’s Chahrazed Ayachi.
In the 55kg division, Adijat Idris followed up with another dominant display, defeating her opponent 8–0 to keep Nigeria firmly on track.
Esther Aseolu added to the tally with a ruthless 10–0 technical superiority win, showcasing Nigeria’s technical depth and superiority across weight classes.
Adekuoroye Seals the Sweep
Veteran star Mercy Adekuoroye capped Nigeria’s dominance with a decisive victory in the 65kg category, defeating Lec Hej Marlyne Ande of the Central African Republic by pinfall.
Her triumph ensured Nigeria completed an emphatic gold medal sweep, reinforcing their reputation as Africa’s undisputed leaders in women’s wrestling.
Silver Medal Effort
Nigeria’s only slip came in the 72kg category, where Ebi Biogos settled for silver after a 6–2 defeat to Tunisia’s Zaineb Sghaier.
Despite that, the team finished with an impressive eight gold and two silver medals, a testament to their consistency and depth.
Men’s Team Contribution
The men’s freestyle team also contributed to the overall success.
Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo secured Nigeria’s only men’s gold medal with a 10–4 victory over Egypt’s Mohamed Mostafa.
Silver medals came from Ebierelayefa Andrew (74kg) and Stephen Akintewe (65kg), while Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli claimed bronze medals.
Nigeria Extend Continental Dominance
This latest triumph marks Nigeria’s 15th African women’s wrestling title, further cementing their legacy as the continent’s powerhouse.
