Competing against seasoned contenders, including Australia, Nigeria’s bid was strengthened by its recent successful hosting of the Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup in December 2024. Peter Smith, Chairman of the CFF Technical Committee, visited Lagos during the World Cup to assess Nigeria’s readiness, marking a significant step towards securing the championship.

Samuel Adeyinka, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF), expressed immense pride in the selection, stating,
“This is a monumental milestone for Nigerian fencing. Securing the 2026 Commonwealth Championships not only elevates our status in the international arena but also inspires our athletes and enthusiasts nationwide.”
He further highlighted the comprehensive evaluation process, noting,
“Over 10 months, every aspect of our bid underwent thorough review, culminating in December’s final technical visit during our successful hosting of a Fencing World Cup.”

Charterhouse Lagos, a key partner in the bid, has pledged unwavering support for the championship. John Todd, Head of School at Charterhouse Lagos, remarked,
“As the first British independent school in West Africa, fencing is a traditional part of our program. We fully support the Fencing Federation of Nigeria’s efforts to bring the Commonwealth Championship to Nigeria.”
