President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, has set an ambitious target for Nigerian athletes, expressing confidence that the country can achieve podium finishes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with the right level of preparation and support.
Okowa made the assertion following a strategic stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja where athletics officials reviewed Nigeria’s performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan and assessed areas requiring improvement ahead of future international competitions.
According to the AFN president, the federation has already begun strengthening its preparation strategy, working closely with sponsors and the National Sports Commission to ensure athletes receive adequate training, welfare support, and improved logistics before the Games.
“The talent and dedication of our athletes are never in doubt. With the right support and preparation, we are confident of a stronger showing,” Okowa said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s outing at the global championships in Tokyo, Okowa praised the athletes for their efforts, noting that several competitors reached finals in major events including the men’s 100m, men’s 200m, men’s 400m hurdles, women’s 100m hurdles, and men’s shot put.
Nigeria finished the competition with a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles, while other athletes produced notable performances that demonstrated the country’s potential to compete at the highest level.
Okowa added that the federation would address some of the challenges that affected Nigeria’s previous campaigns, particularly issues related to athlete logistics, equipment, and travel arrangements. Discussions are also ongoing with established sportswear manufacturers to secure long-term partnerships that will better equip Nigerian athletes for international competitions.
He further acknowledged the contributions of Nigeria’s leading track and field athletes, including Tobi Amusan, Udodi Onwuzurike, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Israel Okon, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who continue to represent the country strongly on the global stage.
The AFN president also called on the media to continue highlighting the achievements of Nigerian athletes, noting that positive coverage plays a crucial role in motivating competitors and building national support ahead of major international tournaments.
With the 2026 Commonwealth Games approaching, Okowa reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerian athletes are adequately prepared to compete and deliver medal-winning performances for the country.
