D’Tigress skipper Nneka Ogwumike has opened up on the team’s unforgettable journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics, describing it as a turning point that has given Nigeria’s women’s basketball team renewed belief ahead of the 2025 AfroBasket.
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard Sports, the WNBA star said reaching the quarter-finals in Paris despite limited preparation was proof that Nigerian talent can compete with the world’s best.
“We went there with very little camp time but we shocked many people,” she said. “That experience taught us we belong at the highest level. Now we want to bring the AfroBasket trophy back home for the fifth time.”
Ogwumike called on the newly established National Sports Commission to release funds early so the team can begin proper preparation camps in February.
“We cannot afford to go into AfroBasket with last-minute arrangements again. The girls deserve better.”
Head coach Rena Wakama echoed the sentiments, praising the fighting spirit shown in Paris.
“Nneka is not just our captain, she is our leader on and off the court. With her experience and the young talent coming through, 2025 can be our year.”
The 2025 AfroBasket is scheduled for later in the year and Nigeria, as defending champions, will be among the favourites. Fans have already started counting down, with many believing this D’Tigress side is the strongest in a decade.
