The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has narrowed its search for a substantive Super Eagles coach to three foreign candidates, Pulse Sports has reliably gathered, as the search that began after Finidi George’s brief stint continues to dominate headlines.
Sources close to the technical committee say the shortlist includes a former African champion coach, a tactician with European experience, and one familiar with West African football. Interim handler Austin Eguavoen remains in the picture but many stakeholders believe the NFF wants a full-time foreign coach to take the team to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.
The decision comes amid growing frustration from fans who watched the Super Eagles struggle in recent friendlies. Social media was awash with debates on Wednesday, with #NewCoach trending. One fan wrote: “We don’t need another interim. Give us a man with pedigree who can make Osimhen, Lookman and Iwobi click.”
NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire confirmed that interviews were ongoing but refused to name the candidates.
“The federation is committed to appointing the best man for the job. The coach must understand Nigerian players and the demands of African football,” he said.
Analysts believe the choice will define Nigeria’s campaign for a sixth World Cup appearance. With matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe looming in March, there is little room for error. Former Eagles striker Victor Ikpeba told reporters the new coach must immediately settle on a playing style. “We have the players but we lack identity. Whether it’s 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, the coach must drill it into the boys fast.”
The announcement is expected before the end of January. Until then, the Super Eagles remain in limbo, and fans continue to hold their breath.
