Nigeria’s para-badminton sensation, Eniola Bolaji, has officially climbed to World No. 1 in the women’s SL3 category following the latest rankings released by the (BWF) on Tuesday, February 17.
Bolaji’s elevation to the summit of world rankings comes on the back of her remarkable silver medal finish at the 2026 World Para Badminton Championship in Bahrain. She fell 2–0 (21–12, 21–17) in the final to Japan’s , then ranked World No. 7, at the New Capital Hall on February 14.
The multiple national and African champion dethroned Indonesia’s from the top of the rankings. Her rise was further strengthened by her commanding performance at the Egypt International in January, where she successfully defended her title for the second consecutive year.
President of the , Mr. Francis Orbih, described the development as a defining moment for Nigerian and African sport, noting that Bolaji’s success reflects deliberate planning and sustained investment in para-badminton.
“This is the biggest news of the year — Eniola Bolaji claiming the World No. 1 spot following her participation in the 2024 Paralympic Games. She would likely have attained this position earlier if she had competed in more tournaments last year.”
“She regained full stability last season and has carried that momentum into this year, already featuring in two major tournaments with outstanding performances,” Orbih stated.
He further acknowledged the vital contributions of the , the , and for their continued support in creating an enabling environment for para-athletes to thrive.
“This achievement is also a testament to the resources committed to para-badminton. Their backing has ensured our athletes can train effectively, compete internationally, and deliver results on the global stage.”
Despite narrowly missing out on gold in Bahrain, Orbih praised Bolaji’s resilience and historic feat.
Many Nigerians hoped for gold, but we must recognise that the competition is equally determined to dethrone her. She has now become the first African to win a silver medal at the Para-Badminton World Championship.
