A contingent of 60 Nigerian student-athletes departed for the inaugural African School Sports Championship in Annaba, Algeria, scheduled from July 26 to August 5, 2025. The team includes top young talents in athletics, swimming, basketball, football, and table tennis, chosen after national trials across multiple states.
This championship is seen as a critical platform for talent identification, allowing promising young athletes to gain exposure to international competition. Officials from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development emphasized that the event aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to strengthen grassroots sports.
Team captain Tosin Oladipo, a rising sprint star, expressed excitement: “Competing on the African stage is an honor. We’re determined to show that Nigeria’s youth can excel and bring home medals.” Coaches and support staff will also attend workshops aimed at improving training techniques and athlete welfare.
