Nigeria has taken a significant step towards hosting one of the world’s largest multi-sport events after formally expressing interest in bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The announcement was confirmed by the Nigeria Olympic Committee, which revealed that the country met the official deadline for submitting an expression of interest.
According to the committee, the proposed host city for the event is Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, which previously hosted the 2003 African Games and demonstrated its ability to organise large-scale international sporting competitions.
The NOC disclosed that the submission was made before the March 28, 2025 deadline, marking a crucial milestone in the early stage of the bidding process for the 2030 Games. However, the committee noted that the next step will depend on securing formal backing from the Federal Government before a full bid can be launched.
Speaking on the development, NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya highlighted the broader significance of the bid, describing it as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s progress on the global stage.
“Nigeria’s bid will present a unique opportunity to showcase our development, enhance our global standing, and invigorate our sports culture.”
If successful, hosting the Commonwealth Games would trigger significant investment in sports infrastructure across the country, particularly in Abuja. Planned improvements could include the construction and upgrade of sporting venues, transport networks, and hospitality facilities required to host thousands of athletes and visitors from across the Commonwealth.
Sports administrators believe the potential economic impact could be substantial. The preparation and staging of the Games would create jobs in sectors such as construction, event management, tourism, and hospitality, while also stimulating the local sports economy and supporting long-term facility development.
Nigeria’s ambition to host the Games is also rooted in its previous experience organising international sporting events. The successful hosting of the 2003 African Games in Abuja remains a reference point that demonstrates the country’s capability to manage complex logistics and deliver major competitions.
Beyond economic gains, stakeholders believe the event could inspire a new generation of Nigerian athletes and further promote national unity through sports participation and cultural exchange.
The final host nation for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is expected to be determined by the Commonwealth Games Federation after the full bidding process is completed.
