Glasgow 2026 has announced that the iconic OVO Hydro will stage the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games on 23 July, marking the first time in Games history that the ceremony will be held inside an arena.
A Groundbreaking Arena Experience for the Commonwealth Games
For the first time, the Opening Ceremony will take place in a world-class indoor venue, bringing spectators closer to the action in an immersive, electric atmosphere unlike traditional stadium ceremonies.
The Hydro, renowned as one of the planet’s greatest live entertainment arenas, will deliver a spectacular “Clyde-built” show that puts the story of Glasgow and its people at the heart of the celebration.

Creative Team Led by Renowned Glasgow Talent
The ceremony is being designed and delivered by top Glasgow-based creatives. Roxana Cole joins as Show and Staging Director, with choreography overseen by Emily Jane Boyle and costume design by Carole Millar. The overall vision is led by Louisa Mahon, Glasgow 2026 Ceremonies Chief.
Massive Volunteer Call: 700 Cast Members Needed
Glasgow 2026 is now casting 700 enthusiastic volunteers to perform in the Opening Ceremony. Roles include symbolic community moments, welcoming athletes, high-energy dance sequences, scripted performances, storytelling, and more.
No previous experience is required, only passion, energy, and a desire to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime event. The minimum age is 16, and people from all backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Who They’re Looking For
- Dancers of all styles: classical, contemporary, jazz, urban/street, ballroom, social, traditional, and culturally specific
- Theatre performers: drama students, amateur groups, musical theatre enthusiasts, or anyone with stage, film, or live performance experience
- Musicians: singers, percussionists, drummers, and anyone with musical talent
- All-round performers: roles that simply require enthusiasm and energy
Volunteer cast members will take part in both live and pre-recorded segments of the show.

The Hydro: Ready for Netball and History
As part of the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), The Hydro will also host the top 12 Commonwealth Netball teams during the Games.

The Games will feature 10 days of elite sport across four iconic venues, welcoming over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories in a dynamic programme of 10 sports and six Para sports.
