In a triumphant conclusion to AfroBasket 2025, Nigeria’s D’Tigress clinched their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title and seventh overall with a commanding 78–64 win over Mali at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on August 3, 2025. This historic victory also extended their unbeaten run in the continental tournament to a remarkable 29 matches dating back to 2015.
Despite trailing 26–21 after the first quarter, Nigeria responded with disciplined execution and scoring balance. Led by Ezinne Kalu, who scored 20 points and delivered five assists, and Amy Okonkwo, who contributed 19 points and nine rebounds, the D’Tigress seized control in the second half. By halftime the teams were tied 41–41, but Nigeria outpaced Mali in the third quarter and dominated the final period with a 17–8 run to secure the championship.
Coach Rena Wakama lauded her players for their calmness and strategic discipline in overcoming early pressure and executing under fire. This win not only reinforced Nigeria’s status as the most successful women’s basketball team in Africa but also earned the D’Tigress automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
