Nigeria has been officially confirmed as one of the nations set to compete in the men’s 3×3 basketball tournament at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking a historic debut for the country in this fast-growing format of the sport.
The announcement was made by Commonwealth Sport following the release of qualified teams for the basketball competitions, which are scheduled to take place from July 24 to July 29, 2026, at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Centre.
Nigeria will compete in the expanded men’s 3×3 field which has now been increased from eight to 12 teams per gender, reflecting the rising global appeal of the half-court discipline after its successful debut at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In the men’s event, Nigeria will line up alongside established nations including Australia, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Scotland and others, with one European qualification place still to be determined.
While the women’s 3×3 competition will also feature 12 teams, Nigeria’s participation in that category has not yet been confirmed in the released list of qualified nations.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, will bring together roughly 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories across multiple sports, including 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball, as part of a 10-sport programme.
Nigeria’s inclusion in the men’s 3×3 basketball tournament is a major milestone for the nation’s basketball programme — signifying growth in its global competitiveness and offering an exciting platform for its athletes to showcase their skills on the Commonwealth stage.
